SECOND OPINION PROGRAM
Patients with painful arthritis need to understand their options. For some, total joint replacement is too aggressive a procedure.
Several less invasive alternatives exist to traditional hip and knee replacements. These surgical options are durable, safe, and
associated with excellent pain relief and postoperative recovery.
Knowledgeable patients make the best decisions about their treatment. We therefore explain every step of the diagnostic and surgical
process. When considering treatment alternatives, we will present a realistic outlook on the results we can achieve. Every effort
is made to avoid the risks of surgery when nonoperative treatments are more advantageous.
Avoid Total Knee Replacement
Partial Knee Replacement: Many patients with isolated knee pain undergo a Total Knee Replacement when a Partial Knee Replacement
would be more appropriate. Based on the principal of Joint Preservation, partial knee replacement targets treatment of only the
damaged area while preserving healthier portions of native cartilage and ligaments.
Recovery is very rapid, and a Partial Knee Replacement is safer, less invasive, and lasts just as long in the right patient. To see
if you are a candidate, X-rays can be mailed to the office. We will then review the X-rays to let you know if these initial views
suggest that a partial knee might be an option. Of course, further X-rays and clinical examination would then be needed. Mail
X-rays to:

Avoid Traditional Total Hip Replacement
Birmingham Hip Resurfacing: An important alternative to total hip replacement is now available in the United States. By
preservation of healthy hip bone, this technologically advanced surgical procedure resurfaces rather than replaces the end of your
femur (thighbone). After healing, there are no virtually no athletic limitations. Hip resurfacing is intended for young, active
adults who are under 60 years of age and in need of a hip replacement. Adults over 60 who are living non-sedentary lifestyles may
also be considered for this procedure.
Anterior Hip Replacement: The procedure can now be performed without cutting any muscles or tendons. Through an anterior
approach, the hip is replaced under image navigation. For most, no postoperative restrictions are necessary.
To see if you are a candidate for either procedures, X-rays can be mailed to the office. We will then review the X-rays to let you
know if these initial views suggest that this surgery might be an option. Of course, further X-rays and clinical examination would
then be needed. Mail X-rays to:

Revision Joint Replacement
For those patients who develop problems or pain after joint replacement, we can often offer a diagnosis and treatment solution. To
see if we can help, X-rays can be mailed to the office. Mail X-rays to:
