JOINT REPLACEMENT
The decision to proceed with surgery is significant and mixed with both hope and anxiety. The goal of any treatment is to
restore a person's quality of life. Surgical alternatives are appropriate when medications and life-style modifications
fail to provide relief. Fortunately, ongoing advances in arthritis surgery have yielded technological breakthroughs and an
ever expanding array of treatment options. All of these surgical alternatives are safe and predictable in our hands.
Only recently is was quite common to overhear that surgery was too painful and required too long a recovery. While joint
replacement remains a major operation, recent developments have improved the recovery process. Long term durability is still
the overall goal, but a new emphasis has been placed on achieving better function, accelerating rehabilitation, and
minimizing pain.
